Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction
The Woburn Public Schools have a proud tradition of excellence. Our district has been recognized for its success on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) tests. Our curriculum, based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, provides challenging and well-rounded experiences for our students. Our philosophy is based on the concept that all students can achieve at high levels. We recognize that a strong education is the key which allows our students to fully participate in our society.
We are continually examining our curriculum to determine areas of improvement. One goal is to make curriculum expectations clear to everyone—teachers, students, and parents. We also want to continue to develop meaningful assessments to evaluate student progress toward our curriculum expectations. An effective way to increase student achievement is to find ways to share promising instructional practices among our teachers.
Our excellent teaching staff is the backbone of the Woburn Public Schools. Teachers are dedicated to making sure that all students succeed. Many teachers have been and will continue to be involved in curriculum development efforts. Our veteran teachers pass on the benefit of their experience both informally and through a formal mentoring program. The program is designed to support teachers during their first three years.
Our full-day school-year kindergarten program, provided at no cost, gives students a great starting point for their formal education. We also have been able to offer older students academic support beyond school hours. Schools may offer after-school tutoring before MCAS testing periods. We also have a large number of students who come for extra support on Saturday mornings in March. The summer vacation provides another opportunity for us to provide academic services to students.
When you consider the fine teaching staff, an excellent support staff, eager students, and enthusiastic, involved parents, you can see why we are so proud of our school system. We will continue to strive for excellence as we build on the successful experiences of the past.
